A Daughter's Quiet Strength to Build a Better, Peaceful Life (Stories of Hope, Resiliency and Restoration - English)

Updated: 3 days ago

Kristine (not her real name) is now an incoming 4th-year college student majoring in psychology, a path she chose due to a deeply traumatic experience. In 2020, Kristine took the brave step of pressing charges against her father after he violently hurt her younger sister. The incident occurred when her father, in a drunken state, tried to discipline her 16-year-old sister for coming home late. While a father’s role in disciplining his children can be seen as honorable and necessary, his actions crossed a line, leaving his daughter severely bruised and traumatized.

According to Kristine, her father was usually a quiet and good man, but his drinking led to many problems at home. His behavior caused a lot of fear and stress for Kristine and her family.

Her father was admitted to the Quezon City Jail on January 23, 2021. This decision drew strong disapproval from her father's relatives, who accused her of lacking "utang na loob" (debt of gratitude) towards her father. However, for Kristine, the safety of her sibling and mother was her only priority, and she chose to disregard the negative remarks from her relatives.

The mother is the family’s breadwinner and an exceptionally hard worker. She balances multiple menial jobs, sells processed meat, and also serves on a task force in Quezon City, enforcing helmet laws for motorcycle riders.

During his father’s time in the QC jail, he demonstrated significant behavioral improvement, actively participating in various jail activities, including Bible studies.

With the assistance of Preso Inc., Kristine’s mother eventually filed an affidavit of desistance on behalf of her daughters, resulting in the case's permanent dismissal. Preso Inc. took the lead in securing the early release of Kimberly’s father, handling all the necessary facilitation and legwork throughout the process. During this time, they also provided essential support to the family. Recognizing Kristine’s potential and her dedication to continuing her education, Preso Inc. connected her with a partner organization that offered additional resources and opportunities.

To support Kristine in finishing her studies, the partner agency regularly provides her with educational assistance. This organization also offered Kristine opportunities to engage in social activities, helping her overcome trauma and fear. Remarkably, she was chosen to host one of the organization’s events, where she excelled. Those who witnessed her hosting were delighted by the revelation of her newfound confidence and talent.

Since returning home on August 18, 2021, Kristine has noticed that her father has cut back on drinking and now takes on more household responsibilities. He helps by preparing meals and washing clothes, while Kristine’s mother and younger sister run a small business selling tocino. Despite this progress, Kristine continues to hope and pray for the day when her father will fully recover from his alcohol addiction so that their family can live a normal and happy life.

According to her co-workers, Kristine never wastes a moment. She is consistently observed working or studying. Her dedication and determination to overcome family challenges and poverty inspire those around her.

Kristine explains that her salary covers household expenses and her education. She emphasizes the importance of time management, patience, and understanding when dealing with his father’s behavior.

Kristine is working to understand her father's behavior, believing that finding out what’s really wrong is key to healing. She is determined to finish her psychology degree and use what she learns to help her family and others who face similar problems. Her goal is to make a positive impact and support those who are going through the same struggles.
