Bernardo's Character Shining Through (Stories of Resilience, Hope and Restoration)

Sharing another story of resilience, hope, and restoration. With the support of PRESO Inc., a man was helped to start anew and lead a lawful life.

Bernardo (not his real name) is a 51-year-old man who spent six months in jail for doing illegal logging in Cagayan. Even though he had a tough time before, Bernardo is determined to change his life for the better now. He wants to focus on farming, work hard, and avoid any more illegal activities.

Originating from Pangasinan, Bernardo found himself involved in coco-lumber cutting due to life's hardships and lack of formal education. Encouraged by his cousins, he joined them in cutting coconut trees, believing it to be a more lucrative venture than farming. Unfortunately, they were apprehended in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, as they pursued cutting with an expired license.

During his time in jail, Bernardo's character shone through. Recognized by a jail officer as a good, industrious, and skilled individual, he took on responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and becoming a reliable errand boy. Interviews with Bernardo's relatives and barangay officers in his community further affirmed his positive qualities. Consequently, the Sanchez Mira Provincial Jail nominated Bernardo as a recipient of the Community Bail Bond of the Preso Inc.

Presently residing with a cousin in Takitok Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, Bernardo actively provides financial assistance to support the education of his cousin's children. Despite being single, his primary focus lies in self-growth and development, emphasizing a commitment to a brighter and lawful future.

Bernardo was sentenced to jail in June 2022 for breaking the law under RA 8048 and its amended version, RA10593, which both relate to illegal logging. However, PRESO Inc. helped him and he was released in December 2022 while awaiting a verdict on his case.

He attends all hearings diligently, demonstrating his determination to make positive changes. PRESO Inc. aims to reduce prison overcrowding by releasing low-risk and financially disadvantaged individuals who have truly reformed and qualify for early release. They strive to encourage positive transformations in the lives of these offenders.

When asked about his experiences in jail, Bernardo shared that his faith had deepened through regular Bible readings. Additionally, he utilized his time productively by participating in the livelihood programs such as bonsai making offered at the provincial jail.

Bernardo has started anew and promises to lead a lawful life free from any illegal actions.
