From Recklessness to Responsibility (Stories of Hope, Resiliency and Restoration - English)

Jonel Salvador, 24, is now thriving as a construction worker. Radiating with pride, he recently shared a photo of an ongoing project he's part of. It's remarkable to see how far he's come, considering just a few years ago, Jonel was behind bars. Jonel was only 17 years old when he was imprisoned for attempted murder. He acknowledges that in his younger years, he was reckless and heedless. He spent most of his time with friends who exerted a negative influence on him, indulging in vices and disregarding his parents' advice. Never did he imagine that such a formidable and grave experience would become the catalyst for transforming his life. One day in 2017, he and his four companions made a daring and impulsive decision to confront a man they believed was flirting with a friend's partner. In a narrow street in Navotas, they brazenly approached a group of men engaged in a drinking spree, inquiring about the alleged individual's whereabouts. The men tersely replied, "Umalis kayo dito kung gusto niyo pang mabuhay" ("Leave if you want to live"). So, they opted to seek out a video shop to pass the time. A disturbance erupted unexpectedly. Jonel and his three friends dispersed in different directions. Unbeknownst to them, one of his friends was assaulted by a member of the drinking group, resulting in the assailant's death allegedly at the hands of Jonel's friend.

Consequently, Jonel and all five of them were apprehended in connection with the murder case.

Jonel, starting in June 2017, found himself imprisoned, feeling hopeless about any chance of being freed soon. Who would even care for him and his friends? They were poor and lacked any connections. He thought he would rot in jail and spend his entire life behind bars. Unexpectedly, PRESO Inc. stepped in to rescue them, facilitating and providing the bail amount needed for temporary freedom. PRESO Inc. based its decision on reports and assessments from DSWD workers who monitored the boys while locked-up at Bahay Pag-asa. In November 2022, Jonel was finally freed after five long years. Despite his time behind bars, Jonel managed to complete Senior High School through distance education. Now, Jonel is fully committed to turning his life around and excelling in his job as a construction worker. He also plans to put up a small business soon with the help of his family and partner.

He's a new man, determined never to relive the grueling five years of imprisonment.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Jonel cherishes the life that God has given him and is dedicated to becoming a productive member of the community.
