Covid19 posed a huge threat to Philippine Jails and Prisons. Initially, we were deeply concerned that Covid19 will devastate our crowded facilities.
A year since then, we are thankful that many of our grim predictions did not materialize. Though some jails and prisons were affected, many still were able to operate without the dreaded consequences.
In this peer-reviewed journal article, we looked at the experiences of Manila City Jail Male Dorm, the biggest city jail in the Philippines and how it maintained a Covid19 -free existence. We credit the management of the Warden Randel Latoza and his staff for their creative innovations on how to deal with the pandemic. We also discussed the shared governance scheme where Persons Deprived of Liberties are actively engaged in co-managing the facility.
